Cannabidiol: A Saving Grace For Schizophrenic Patients

A recent review published in Schizophrenia Research in the first quarter of this year, 2015 showed how CBD is helpful in the management of psychotic symptoms experienced by individuals with schizophrenia. This brings us to what Schizophrenia is:

Schizophrenia is a psychotic mental disorder that comes with occasional mood changes and behavior. It shows symptoms like hallucination (seeing things that aren’t there or hearing voices), delusions, experiencing unorganized movement/speech, difficulty in performing your daily activities, uncontrolled emotional display and psychological withdrawal changes especially in social activities.

However, the cause of schizophrenia is not exact because it is not fully understood by all, even though it is known to be connected with genetic predisposition. It is also linked with environmental factors such as immune system disorder, stress, and malnutrition before birth and some viral diseases.

Schizophrenia occurs as a result of some level of modification in the neurotransmitters (that is those compounds that stimulates neurons such as dopamine and serotonin) thereby impeding the nervous cells that communicates with each other that results to moving, remembering, thinking and emotional control.

The hallucination experience with a schizophrenia patient is caused by an elevated increase in the signaling of the systems in the deeper area of the brain (that is the subcortical region) that controls the integration of signals from other parts of the brain like sleep, attention, emotions, movement and sensation and so on.

There is no known cure for schizophrenia but its symptoms can be managed with medications and other health supportive services. Most of the antipsychotic medications used to manage schizophrenia symptoms have a high degree of side effects. These side effects are so harsh that schizophrenia patients prefer to remain with the symptoms of the ailment rather than going through the side effects of the medication that is supposed to ameliorate their situation..

These side effects ranges from mild to severe, such as blurred vision, dizziness, drying of the mouth, constipation and drowsiness that normally disappears in couple of weeks; while more severe side effects are experiences like facial tics, pacing, tremors, difficulty in muscle control or rigidity and spasms ( which is the tightening of muscles or sudden contractions).

To help increase patients compliance, development of a safer and more effective medication for schizophrenia patients that will lead in easing them in managing symptoms for a long period is encouraged, thus the discovery and use of CBD in the management of schizophrenia symptoms.

CBD in the management of Schizophrenia symptoms

CBD have shown to be useful in the modulation or prevention of psychotic symptoms or cognition disorders experienced by schizophrenia patients. A European Neuropsychopharmacology review published on January 2014 equally discovered the antipsychotic ability of CBD.

An additional study has proven that schizophrenia patients have increased level of cannabinoid in some parts of their brain because of an increased number of cannabinoid receptors. With this, inhibition of some pathways occur which is somewhat beneficial to schizophrenia patients.

The use of CBD in the reduction of symptoms experienced by schizophrenia patients can never be over-emphasized, hence its wide adoption by schizophrenic sufferers.
